Working with Kids
I did a photo shoot recently with 2 kids, ages 6 and 8. It was pretty frustrating. They would NOT stop making silly faces. Their mother cajoled, begged and scolded. The kids would sit nicely with their arms around each other, eyes crossed and tongues out. Then one would punch the other. The older one would get the younger in a headlock while scrunching up the left side of his face.
How do you get a photo for the grandparents when the kids are so wired? It’s not easy and sometimes you just have to take what you get. But with a little plan, you can cut the silly faces off at the pass and the kids can still have fun during the photo shoot. Promise that you will take a bunch of silly face photos AFTER the kids give you the smiles and poses you need. This deal usually works.
The kids really don’t want Mom to be upset. They just want to have fun. So promise them the opportunity for that fun AND get your good shots. (Those silly faces can make a great story board that may not be Mom’s planned portrait but is hard to resist.)
